Working Holiday Visas
Working Holiday visa (subclass 417)
This visa has been designed for people who are between 18 and 30 years of age and wish to work in Australia for a period of up to 12 months. In order to be eligible to apply for this visa you must be a citizen of one of the following countries:
- Belgium;
- Canada;
- Republic of Cyprus;
- Denmark;
- Estonia;
- Finland;
- France;
- Germany;
- Hong Kong;
- Republic of Ireland;
- Italy;
- Japan;
- Republic of Korea;
- Malta;
- Netherlands;
- Norway;
- Sweden;
- Taiwan; or
- United Kingdom.
The requirement of being a citizen of one of the above countries is due to the fact that Australia currently has reciprocal agreements with those countries. Apart from being the citizen of one of the above countries, you must also:
- not have any dependant children;
- have never applied for a Working Holiday visa in the past;
- be outside Australia when you apply for this visa; and
- have sufficient funds to support yourself in Australia.
It is also adviseble to take out private health insurance as you will not be covered by the Australian health care system for the duration of your stay in Australia. This visa allows you to work for up to a maximum of 6 months with any one employer. This means that throughout the duration period of your visa, you can either work for 2 employers (6 months each) or for multiple employers throughout the 12 month period.
Once the first Working Holiday visa has expired, you may also be eligible for a second working holiday visa but only under the condition the you have undertaken at least 3 months of seasonal work in regional Australia while on your first Working Holiday visa. Alternatively, your are only enttiled to one Working Holiday visa in your lifetime.

Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462)
This visa is similar to the Working Holiday visa. However, it is only available to people from Chile, Iran and Thailand who have some kind of tertiary education. In order to be eligible to apply for this visa, you must:
- be between 18 and 30 years of age;
- be outside Australia when you apply for this visa;
- have sufficient funds to support yourself in Australia;
- have the approval from your government; and
- be able to show functional English.
Please note that there are also other requirements that you may need to satisfy when applying for this visa. This visa allows the applicants to undertake periods of temporary and casual work in Australia.
It is also important to note that Australia has recently signed reciprocal agreements with Bangladesh and Turkey.
