Tourist visa (subclass 676)

This visa may be applied for and utilised by people who are currently outside Australia or by people who are currently in Australia. This visa is intended to provide people with a permit to stay in Australia for holiday, recreation or to visit family and friends. The holders of this visa are not allowed to work but can use this visa to study in Australia provided that the study period does not esceed three months. The length of this visa once granted is generally for three to six months. However, in exceptional circumstances, this visa may also be granted for a period of twelve months.  

In order to succesfully apply for this visa, the applicants must:

• have a genuine intention to visit Australia for one of the permitted purposes;
• have sufficient funds to support themselves for the entire duration of their stay in Australia;
• meet certain character requirements; and
• take out private health insurance, if requested.

This visa does not presume that you have a sponsor in Australia and accordingly a sponsorship from an Australian citizen or an Australian permanent resident is not required.

Sponsored Family Visitor visa (subclass 679)

This visitor visa is only for people who are currently outside Australia and wish to visit Australia as tourists or for the purpose of visiting their relatives. This visa presumes that you have an eligible relative in Australia and requires sponsorship.

In order to successfully apply for this visa, the applicants must:

• have a genuine intention to visit Australia for one of the permitted purposes;
• have sufficient funds to support themselves for the entire duration of their stay in Australia;
• meet certain character requirements;
• take out private health insurance, if requested; and
• have an eligible sponsor in Australia who is prepared to guarantee their departure following the expiry of their visa.

The eligible sponsor in Australia must be an Australian citizens or an Australian permanent resident. In addition, the eligible sponsor in Australia must be one of the following:

• a parent;
• a child;
• an adopted child;
• a spouse;
• a brother;
• a sister;
• a grandparent;
• a grandchild;
• an aunt;
• an uncle;
• a niece;
• a nephew; or
• a 'step' equivalent of any of the above; or
• a member of an Australian parliament (Commonwealth, State or Territory); or
• an authorised person representing a Commonwealth, State or Territory department; or
• a local government mayor.

Electronic Travel Authority (ETA)

This visa is designed for people from selected countries who wish to visit Australia for short periods of time. The maximum stay on this visa is three months. The purpose of the visit may be tourism or a visit to family and friends living in Australia. Once this visa has been granted, the visa number is linked to your passport and no lable will be placed in your passport. This visa can be applied for online.

In order to be eligible to apply for this visa, you must be from one of the following countries:
